Volunteer Spotlight: Shirley Koop
'I love seeing individuals experiencing God's original blueprint for their life'

Picture
If you’ve ever wandered into the Resource Center before a 9 a.m. worship service at CCC, you’ve likely seen Shirley Koop. She’s a fixture there, and that’s only one area where she has a heart to serve. In just three years at CCC, she’s also spent time mentoring and discipling other women, making and serving meals at Highland Community Church (one of our local ministry partners), greeting at the Converge 2:14 Conference, setting up and serving our annual Thanksgiving Day luncheon and serving on the Communion Team.

How did you get involved in the ministry in serving at CCC?
I have the spiritual gifts of exhortation and administration. I saw needs and responded. I like to see individuals grow to maturity in their walk with the Lord. I found that when I served, I saw individuals being blessed. With the Resource Center, I volunteered because I was familiar with Christian books. We sold a select group of books in the center when I started and I could recommend books that would help individuals grow in their walk with the Lord, or deal with questions that impacted their life right then and there.

What do you enjoy about serving in ministry?
I love ministry. I love seeing individuals experiencing God's original blueprint for their life: Having a fresh encounter, a spiritual relationship with God, and then see them grow to spiritual maturity. One of the reasons I was drawn to Christ Community Church is seeing the large percentage of individuals with servant's hearts willing to roll up their sleeves and being willing to do what was needed to reach those who have no spiritual background and to grow those who are in the body of Christ. This energizes me. I love to build leaders who will then impact others for the kingdom of God.

What is one of your favorite moments or memories from serving at CCC?
When working in the Resource Center one morning, a new visitor to the church came into the center and started looking at a Celebrate Recovery Bible. Another lady was in the Resource Center and she heard the first lady say to me that she was looking, but didn't have the money to buy the Bible. The other lady pulled me aside and discreetly gave me money and asked that I give our first-time visitor the Bible. To see the joy cross the face of that visitor when I gave her the Bible and tell her it was a gift from an anonymous source was breathtaking!

What would you tell someone who is wondering if they should get involved as a volunteer at CCC?
Do it! I love Christ Community Church because it is made up of so many with a servant's heart. They do because they want to do, not because it is a burden to them. For those who have never served, there are opportunities all over the place. See where the Lord is working in your area of interest and I would  imagine the door of opportunity will swing open and you will be a blessing to others as well as be blessed with new friendships, growth-enhancing opportunities  and  leaving an impact  on the  lives  of others with eternal ramifications. Do it! Love it! If one volunteer opportunity doesn't work out for you, find  another one, but don't short-change yourself. Grow! Make a difference in your world for the kingdom of God.
